Heinz Carl Heinrich Winckler was born on 22 March 1978 in Stellenbosch, in the Cape Province of South Africa. He is the eldest of three children. His mother is Elsa Winckler, a noted author. Before fame, he studied law at Stellenbosch University.
Heinz Winckler came to prominence when his debut single, “Once In A Lifetime”, sold over 100,000 copies in South Africa and was certified double platinum. He was nominated for two South African Music Awards (SAMAs) for that same song, one for Best Single (“Once In A Lifetime”) and another for Best Pop Album for his album One Step Closer. In addition to his musical successes, Heinz has acted in theatre and film, performed in major musicals, and gained nominations and wins in several other award forums, including Afrikaans-music awards and People Magazine Crystal
Heinz’s musical breakthrough came in 2002, when he won the very first season of South African Idols. Upon winning, he released “Once In A Lifetime,” which became his signature single and launched his career. His first album, "One Step Closer," followed, containing that hit plus other popular tracks such as “Soledad” (a cover) and “Next Stop Happiness.” Over the next few years, he released more albums (e.g., Come Alive, Moment of Truth), which included both covers and his own songwriting.
Heinz started as a pop artist. Over time, his artistic direction shifted toward Christian contemporary/worship music, especially after about 2015, when he began to release music with religious themes and minister in churches.
He has been married to Aletté-Johanni (also known as Aletté de Klerk) since 2006. They have four children together.
Heinz is a pastor, speaker, writer, and is involved in Christian ministry. He has written a book of testimony about identity and calling. His mother’s role as a writer appears to have had an influence. He also enjoys family life, and he has spoken about how his faith and family help keep him grounded in the changes fame brought.
